Grace Hooper

Grace Hopper was a very accomplished American computer scientist, mathematician, and United States Navy rear admiral (1). Her work in computer science led to many new theories such as the theory of machine independent programming languages which led to programs such as FLOW-MATIC and COBOL, which are used to this day (1). Following the bombing of pearl harbor, Hopper decided to enlist in the United states military in the naval reserves2. She was later assigned to the computation division at Harvard University where she helped develop the MARK-1 computer that was essential for war efforts like mine sweeping calibration and rocket trajectory calculations (2). She retired from the navy at the age of 79 making her the oldest serving officer in the U.S. armed forces (2). Hopper was fundamental in revolutionizing computer science and being an instrumental asset for the United States during world war (2).
